About the work

This 1954 painting belongs to the moment in Boris Margo’s work when light ceases to function as an element of representation and becomes an autonomous force within the image. A narrow luminous vertical emerges from an almost impenetrable blue-black space, surrounded by dark calligraphic lines, cool gray planes, and saturated fields of blue. The composition evokes at once an unknown script, an architectural structure, and a space existing beyond the world of recognizable objects.

By the mid-1950s, Margo was progressively freeing his visual language from literal Surrealist imagery. Earlier organic forms were transformed into signs, lines, and structures of light. Laurence Schmeckebier would later characterize this development as a movement toward “a luminous dark-against-light pattern.”

What is especially powerful here is the tension between the material and the immaterial. The dark structure still carries weight and an almost architectural density, while the vertical light seems to belong to another order altogether. It has no evident source and illuminates nothing in a conventional sense. Emerging from darkness, it becomes a sign of presence—an image of something that can be sensed but never fully defined.

This principle finds a later development in From Elements of Evening (1957), now in the collection of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. There, the dark framework becomes increasingly dematerialized and vertical bands of light begin to generate the pictorial space themselves. The museum received the work in 1958, shortly after its creation.

The 1954 painting captures this transformation while it is still unfolding. Calligraphic sign, space, and light remain in tension with one another, and it is from this tension that one of the defining qualities of Margo’s mature painting emerges: an abstract space in which the visible seems to open onto the unknowable.
